3 DIY Ways to Spruce Up Your Entryway

This season make your own holiday displays that demand attention. Making your own Christmas pot display isn’t as complicated as it might seem. Here are a few ways you can create your own decorations at home, with a little inspirational help from the team at Greenleaf Garden Services.

What You’ll Need:

  • Spruce
  • Magnolia
  • Red twig dogwood
  • Curly willow
  • Blue and cold juniper
  • Boxwood
  • Holly
  • Cedar
  • Eucalyptus
  • Winterberry
  • Pepperberry
  • White pine
  • Pinecones
  • Plastic nursery pots
  • Floral foam
  • Soil/Sand mix

Prepare Your Pot

To get started, place floral foam bricks in the center of the pot. This will give some of the larger pieces some stability. Then fill your plastic nursery pot with 50/50 soil and sand mixture. Make sure it’s damp and packed well.

Start Creating

You’ll want to layer your pot with an assortment of tall, medium, and short plant pieces. You can salvage many of these from your own yard, a local nursery or Christmas tree seller, and you can even pick up some of the accent pieces at a crafts store. Start by inserting the larger pieces like red twig dogwood, and work your way out to fill the rest of the pot with medium and then small plants. Insert accent pieces last, like pinecones and berries.

Styled Winter Green Examples

In all three examples below, we used the same wintergreens and plants but in different combinations and arrangements.  As you can see, the taller pieces are in the back or middle, and the smaller accent pieces are toward the front and center. You almost want to think of the arrangement as a triangle, with the height being in the middle, and tapering off on either side.
